Gallant Miscellany

Promotional video

In this promo you can listen to some fragments of the sonatas in C minor and in B flat major of the brothers Joan and Josep Pla, virtuosos oboists who, as the chronicles of the time confirm, developed their career with great success throughout Europe. The spanish repertoire for oboe and basso continuo in 18th century is really scarce and we owe the Pla brothers some of these few pages (probably the best ones). The content of this promo is part of our CD "Hasta romper el corazón" (nº 17 of the series "Órganos Históricos en Aragón") published by the Fernando el Católico Institution in 2017.

J.B. & J. Pla: Sonata b-flat major for oboe and basso continuo - Largo

In the Pla family of musicians, three of the brothers were outstanding oboists and composers: Manuel (? -1766), José (1728-1762) and Juan Bautista (before 1728-1773). The first one of them developed his career in Madrid while the other two traveled together throughout Europe as virtuoso players, showing their art in Lisbon, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Stuttgart, etc. There are many testimonials of the time praising the great quality of their interpretations. The Mercure de France would compliment them in the following terms, after one of his performances in the Concerts Spirituels: "Nothing else can be asked, nor as to the sweetness of sound, or the delicacy of the melody, or in the manner and accuracy of their interpretation "..." Monsieur Pla deserves to be considered as the best oboist in Europe and seems to have united his brother’s passion to his own particular talent "...
